Description
Principato was founded by Giuseppe Principato in Messina in 1887. In order to promote his publishing house on a national rather than local level, Giuseppe Principato sent his son Ettore to Milan where he would gain working experience at the publishing house Treves. In Milan, Ettore met and published the works of important Italian scholars such as Giovanni Gentile, Pietro Silva, Attilio Momiliano, to name a few, and he understood that the key to the success of a publishing house was the publishing of high-quality books.
In the aftermath of WWII, Giuseppe, Ettore’s son, was appointed head of the company. During the time of Giuseppe’s management, Principato began to focus its activities on the publishing of school materials, in collaboration with renowned authors for all school subjects.
As regards materials for the learning and teaching of English, it is important to mention the publication of Got the message? in 1982, which was innovative at the time for its implementation of a communicative approach, and The grammar you need in 1988, which instead promoted the study of grammar as a tool for learning a foreign language.
In 2019, Principato was acquired by the Gruppo Editoriale Eli (based in Loreto, Ancona), which owns other brands such ELi, La Spiga, Bulgarini, thus publishing materials for all subjects at any school level in the Italian context.
