Description
Ulrico Hoepli, the founder of this publishing house, come from Switzerland to Milan, where in 1871 he acquired an old bookshop, the Libreria Laengner in Galleria De Cristoforis, after having worked as an apprentice bookseller.
He soon began printing and publishing books (the first one was a grammar for teaching French by G.S. Martin) and then technical and scientific texts (periodicals and textbooks). The titles in his catalogue were therefore characterised by their practical applications, as they were aimed at training workers by teaching them specialist skills. One of those books was the Manuale dell’ingegnere, by G. Colombo, first published in 1877.
In the 1920s, the Publisher, like many others in Italy, developed close links with the Fascist Regime. In this context they published a book collecting Mussolini’s writings and speeches.
Ulrico died in 1935. As he did not have any children, Carlo, his nephew, and Carlo’s sons Gianni and Ulrico inherited the business.
During the Second World War, the warehouse was bombarded and destroyed, but fortunately it did not take long for the Publisher to rebuild their catalogue, also introducing new titles, such as the Enciclopedia Hoepli, published in 1955. The last volume of this encyclopaedia was published in 1968.
In 1980 Hoepli introduced for the first time a catalogue entirely dedicated to school textbooks.
In 2012 the 85th edition of the Manuale dell’Ingegnere was published.

Hoepli’s historical archive is now one of the collections hosted at the Centro Apice at the University of Milan. It contains a wealth of documents, including editorial files, promotional material, and correspondence with the authors.
