Short description
The book is divided into 45 units. The units begin with a dialogue accompanied by drawings, followed by extensive grammar notes (Riflessione grammaticale) and exercises. However, units 42 to 45 begin with a reading passage about current social issues (women and society, work, racism, violence and criminality). Some of the units include a section titled Language behaviour which introduces functional elements such as expressing obligation and necessity, making a hypothesis, making a request.
The Appendix of the book contains tests which can be cut out, completed, and handed in to the teacher.
Oxford University Press contributed to writing the texts in English and in preparing the original recordings.
An updated edition of the book was published in 1982, titled New learning to communicate. Its contents were enriched with more language games and communication tasks. Additionally, the book offers different “Teaching paths” (“itinerari didattici”) to practise speaking and writing skills.
Interestingly, however, the grammar notes (Riflessione grammaticale) in the updated edition appear to be less detailed the ones in the older edition.
